The Lunar Octet has been performing their brand of all original afro-cuban jazz to enthusiastic audiences in Ann Arbor, Detroit, and San Francisco since the mid-1980s. Their new album, “Convergence,” recorded in Ann Arbor and slated to be released in early 2020, features compositions by Steven Hiltner, Aron Kaufman, and Paul Vornhagen. Over the years the band has evolved from an experimental music ensemble well-known to Ann Arbor audiences as the Lunar Glee Club, to the high-energy latin-jazz force that has appeared at The Ark, the Kerry Town Concert House, the Flint Jazz Festival, Michigan Jazz Festival, as well multiple appearances at the Detroit Jazz Festival. Lunar Octet members are all prominent players and band leaders in their own right, having performed with Paul McCandless, Chick Corea, Rick Margitza, J.C. Heard, Pete Seeger, John Patatucci, Tumbao Bravo, Charged Particles, the Dream Ensemble, and Craig Taborn, among others.

"From the perspective of a jazz fan who had grown up in the Chick Corea – Herbie Hancock – Michael Brecker era and beyond, the Lunar Octet is likely the most universally listenable band that performs anywhere. Strong comradery, shared vision, and high-level musicianship come together to make hearing their truly original music so special. There is nothing baffling about the Lunar Octet. It is a joy to listen to them every time.” Michael G. Nastos
